notes:
-this was a marathon show; 5 hours minus 15 minutes for the john thompson show. and it was a good marathon. I was actually happy with all 5 hours.
-I really like every go:organic orchestra cd I've heard (there at at least 3). something about the jazz/world fusion that they do is really great. and yusef lateef can still play, despite being ancient.
-the embarrassment/minutemen set was inspired by jon solomon in the honor of michael jackson's recent arrest. that embarrassment cover is pretty damn awesome.
-abner jay is this really strange outsider blues by a one man band. I don't know too much about him, but I definitely enjoyed what I heard.
-the a frames actually sound surprisingly similar to six finger satellite.
-I don't think the sonic youth song from the love dolls superstar soundtrack is a cover (though that song is an iron maiden song), but I do know that it's pretty great.
-two versions of albert ayler's "ghost" today. the gary lucas version is good - when he has an acoustic guitar in his hand, he can do amazing things. and of course, the original (the short version) is pure beauty.
-the hungarian folk song that I played came from a folkways compilation that puts together some of the folk songs that bela bartok recorded in his ethnomusicological studies in the early 20th century. great stuff, especially when there is instrumental accompaniment.
-no show for me for the next 2 weeks. next week is thanksgiving (of course), and the following week is orchestra concert week, so I have rehearsal.
Very Titanically

notes:
-that babbletron song demonstrates what happens when a bunch of sci-fi dorks get together and write hiphop (and that is meant in the best of all possible ways). plus it has some of the most fun production I've heard in a while.
-atavistic is officially off my shit list. they sent us a big package of stuff, including the sun ra and brotzmann I played. the sun ra was him backing some doo-wop singers in the mid 1950s. fairly straight forward, but with the oddly voiced chords that sun ra is known for. and the brotzmann/van hove/bennink was just nuts. somehow I never imagined I'd hear the celesta in free jazz...
-I really like both the quick fix kills and viza noir records. good driving rock. plus the qfks were awesome at the show at jon's house a few weeks ago.
-hale zukas=one dude from a minor forest, one dude from burmese, and another dude. this wins the award for the coolest 3" packaging I've ever seen - some orange paper thing with golden ducklings on the front.
-evan ziporyn gave a colloquium talk at the music department earlier that night. he's part of the bang on a can all stars and runs a gamelan orchestra in boston. the amok piece was supposed to be his last for gamelan, but then it wasn't because he had earned a reputation as "the gamelan guy." great stuff.
-there's a long story behind this robert ashley piece. I tried to explain it on air and fairly bungled it. basically it involves ashley reading a text by this guy john barton walgamot while electronic bleeps and bloops go on in the background. the catch is that the wolgamot book (called in sarah, menken...) is essentially the same sentence that graudually permutates and lists off just about ever major figure in
western culture. it's an amazing piece of quasi-minimalist music. I highly recommend listening to all of it if you get a chance.
