notes:
-joe strummer could still write songs even up to the end. that song was pretty great.

-got a couple hecklers over the kronos quartet. someone saying that it wasn't real music and that I should "play more punk." silly close-minded people.

-matmos was in town on october 15 for a colloquim at the princeton music department. I had a chance to interview them beforehand. unfortunately, the first 5-10 minutes of the interview were lost in a tragic minidisk accident. but the rest was still very interesting. martin schmidt and drew daniel are both remarkably intelligent. I may post a transcript of the interview here if I get some time. the songs listed after the interview were actually interspersed between sections of it.

-I had a chance to improvise with gerry hemmingway the day before this show for a class on improvisation that I'm in. definitely one of the more fun/rewarding musical experiences I've ever had.

-other than that, no real comments. some good songs individually, but as a whole, today's show just didn't seem to work quite right.

notes:
-I too was happy with my show today. I agree with the general concensus
that there's more really good new stuff now than there's been in a
while. I liked all the new stuff I played today, especially the us
maple, tyrades, rope, winfred e eye, popular shapes, and scout niblett.

-steven jesse bernstein was a poet who died in 1991, but recorded some
of his poetry before dying. he then gave the tapes to steve fisk of
pell mell who made music to go with it. only one song was finished
before bernstein's death (not the one I played), but he approved of it
and the project went ahead. the results are brilliant, one of the
better music/poetry combinations I've heard.

-blacktop was mick collins band between the gories and the dirtbombs.
the song was a beefheart cover. eventually I'll be reviewing that for
dusted.

-now for my matthew shipp rant: matthew shipp needs to not play on
every album on thirsty ear. he's run out of ideas and interesting
contributions. case in point, the new david s ware record. all the
players (beyond shipp) are phenomenal. mat maneri is probably the best
non-bass sting player in jazz today. but then shipp has to come in with
his korg synthesizer and drench almost every song in lots of cheesy fake
string sounds. I can imagine really loving this album if shipp were
even to just play on a regular piano. but I just can't get past the
awful fake string tones. shipp needs to either step away from the piano
for a while or just ditch those fucking synthesizers. I don't want him
to butcher any more potentially good records. end rant. the song I
played was saved because it's just david s ware and guillermo e brown.

-the jonestown song is a pop group cover.

Notes:
-the aestuarium comp is a triple 7" comp, each 7" with their own obscure midwestern funk/soul group. I reviewed this album for dusted magazine and it's pretty damn good. nothing like finding obscure early 70s funk. I hope aestuarium sends us a copy of it...

-I'm very excited to hear the full faust/dalek album. from talking with the dalek guys at the fall show last year, it sounds like it was a really interesting and fun project. this one song was definitely more dalek than faust, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. dalek has a way of making the floor rumble like no other hiphop group.

-after a year and a half of staring at me, I finally broke down and got the fluxus anthology (for samples, go here). good stuff all around. WPRB needs more la monte young.

-every time I've played the linda perhacs, I've gotten callers asking about it. it's uncanny.

-lots of good, new underground hiphop being released right now. I really like the new aesop rock, and I liked the tracks I played from the lifesavas and j-live. there's a new record from danger mouse that I forgot to play this week, and other good stuff to come soon on def jux, quannum, etc. very exciting.

-peter brotzmann came as a response to art, who ended his show with jimi hendrix doing machine gun with the band of gypsies. so I ended with brotzmann's (decidedly different) version. I also couldn't figure out what to play next, so I just killed 10 minutes with one song.
