notes:
-I need to get me more rock steady. that stuff is so great.
-got another call from the discharge guy. he wanted to request discharge. I reminded him that he had done so last week. then he requested the residents. I ignored him.
-dr octagon into joe mcphee into dream syndicate was the most amazing series of segues I think I've had. the dream syndicate started on the note that the joe mcphee stopped on. it was just one of those nights.
-I finally got around to playing celtic frost, after pulling it for almost a month and not actually playing it.
-the thing from the kraag cd sounded almost hauntingly like the black elf speaks that proceeded it. I hadn't even planned it that way. it just kinda happened. like I said, it was one of those nights.
-fred lane sure has some killer sax players. great song
-the voltaire brothers is mick collins of the gories/dirtbombs doing funk. it's a totaly p-funk homage, but it's absolutely wonderful. definitely the most summery album of the summer
-curse of dialect makes me remarkably happy. there's something about the off-kilter usage of samples, odd vocals, and just general strangeness that is totally appealing. one of the coolest hiphop albums I've heard recently.
-the last set was about 10 minutes too long, but had some pretty great songs in it nonetheless.
-overall, I'm pretty happy with this show. definitely one of my better shows of the summer, perhaps all-time. and it wasn't even overly noisy...

notes:
-someday I think thirsty ear will figure out how to make jazz and hiphop work together (maybe in the forthcoming el-p album they're putting out this fall), but the blue series continuum sure doesn't.
-I first heard pj harvey opening for u2 while sitting in the very last row of an arena. her sound was a muddy indecipherable mess. I was fairly disappointed when I got the cd and it was nice and clean production-wise. that's still a great song, though.
-listening to david bowie's low for the first time yesterday, I realized you can directly trace the lineage of Nikki Sudden through the first half of low. debutante blues, by the way, is the best song ever, no questions asked.
-shotakovich and cummings were played at the same time, to excellent effect. the opening movement of that concerto is nicely ominous, perfectly complimenting the dark overtones of the cummings.
-a caller called in thinking the sightings was merzbow (he actually named a record). not too far off, though...
-upon giving piper at the gates of dawn a good listen in the past couple days, I've decided that momus is almost directly influenced by syd barret's songwriting style. that is my favorite playable momus track, though. we had tickets to give away, which were snatched up.
-the radar secret service was pleasantly dark. nice to hear new music from ohio that's good!
-u can unlearn guitar is (according to don rettman) andy from the bunny brains. this explains a lot.
-richard bishop is a mean acoustic guitar player.
-overall a pretty good show, after a slightly uneven start
-live music from the threats next week, so tune in!

notes:
-back at my normal time after a few weeks of flux. twas a good show, I believe.
-the russendisko comp is yet another fine compilation of oddities from trikont. what this proved to me is that ska-punk never really died, it just went east. somehow russian singing makes it that much more fun.
-the roach/braxton is some of the best jazz I've heard in a while. roach provides a really solid base without being constricting, and braxton just fills up the space around. what a great album.
-holger hiller is formerly of palais schaumburg. this 1986 album finds him making really dark, sample based songs with some semblance of a band there too. the songs are really strange, but pretty great at the same time. I highly recommend it.
-nobody does black sabbath better than the ruins.
-the radio birdman and buzzcocks requests came from a barbeque going on at greg's and my house (which I would go to after my show) involving a bunch of prb folk.
-I find myself strangely attached to that british post-rolling stones glam scene. I just can't get enough of nikki sudden and the various projects surrounding him. crime and the city solution were roland s howard (formerly of the birthday party and a sudden collaborator), epic soundtracks (sudden's brother) and a few other folks. pretty great gloom rock.
-terry callier has the most amazing voice I've ever heard on a folk singer. that record is pretty awesome.
-fugazi's the argument is a fucking great album. there's no denying this fact.
-I will have a live set from the old scottish punk band, the threats, on my show on the 28th. they've reunited after 20 years and are just finishing a tour in the states, playing all material from their late 70s-early 80s hayday. pretty great stuff, so be sure to tune in!
