Adam Rudolph - Circumambulation - Go: Organic Orchestra: 1 - Meta

notes:
-I like tropecalia. it's fun, exotic and just plain great. I just need to find some early tom ze to make my life complete
-fellaheen wins the award for strange random 7" of the week (with the boffa/happy grindcore split coming in a close second). how does a one man band create free jazz over a really awesome groove?
-the animal collective really does (as narin says in his review) sound like a bunch of load records guys sitting around a campfire making music. which is a good thing
-I might be seeing magma tomorrow, though I am not sure. I imagine it would be a very bizarre evening of music, though perhaps not necessarily good
-I finally took it upon myself to make a clean copy of the cannibal ox record, which was normally too dirty for radio play. it is definitely the best hiphop record so far in the 21st century
-current 93 reminded me strangely of harry potter (or maybe it was lord of the rings). does that make it hobbit rock?
-the more I listen to that tindersticks record, the more I realize that it really works well as an album, but not necessarily as individual tracks
-adam rudolph made a great transition from me into the clothesline. having a show before wilbo is really great. I just want to stay and pick his mind about free jazz and improv music.

notes:
-ugh. this was an unispired show today. it started off badly when the concert calendar took 10 minutes to read, then the flexidisk I was going to play next skipped, then I got a pissed off caller, then I accidentally started to play something that I think was a dnp. basically my whole first hour was crap
-!!! is crap. they trying waaaaaaaaay too hard and it's just boring in the end
-I think I need to just go out and buy myself the entire amphetamine reptile catalog, because I haven't heard anything on there that I haven't liked
-optical*8 is what all japanese noise-psych should be
-I agree with greg that that birthday party track is totally unlike everything else on that album, but that it is pretty awesome
-procol harum was inspired by reading the rye coalition tour diary linked from art's blog. I finally know what they sound like!
-a guy called in when I played the gibson bros thinking it was the pretty things. listening to their track on nuggets 2, I don't see the connection
-overall too much scrambling around today for this show to have any consistancy. I chalk it up to the 500 locked grooves...

Mamoru Fujieda - The Night Chant I, Cycle I - The Night Chant - Tzadik

notes:
-brother ah was gloriously spooky. that guy was crazy, and I like it a bunch
-fe-mail to farmersmanual was some wonderful noise. got my fix for death noise for the day.
-I think that listening to that alvin lucier cd in a dark room with the volume all the way up and your eyes closed would be the closest approximation to either an acid trip or death, I'm not sure which

-I wish I could've had another hour or 2. there's so much great music that I just couldn't get to.
-antheil was from trenton and was the first american composer to really be noticed in the music world in europe. he was inspired by stravinsky, and his best works take the rhythmic force of stravinsky and take it to the next level. I could write a whole lot more here, but unless you all want to hear it, I will refrain
-thanks to thomas of the worried waltz for lending me a bunch of these recordings

notes:
-I am positive that my show today was saved from the outset by the absolutely amazing background music I had. that record came from a donation to the station from sean. it was so gloriously cheesy that it made everything right
-so many distractions today, I was amazed I pulled this show off. jon was recording a very loud band for his show, and jannon was training a new dj all over the studio. I could barely hear what I was playing a good chunk of the time.
-the new radiohead took a while, but I've finally reached the point where I like it. playing it today helped. they somehow managed to create a best of with entirely new songs. not as good as just about any of their other records, but I still like it
-new comets on fire totally kicks ass. I think they're coming to prb at some point in july for brian farmer's show
-some guy called me a few times requesting that I play nothing but breakbeat techno. I guess the last 20 minutes of leif's show had him all psyched up. so he requested that I play 2 hours of nothing but that. and when I didn't, he called back and lectured me about how it would "attract so many new listeners" and asked what I got out of punk rock. so I just ignored him and played more noisy punk and had a good time
-I need to get me some racebannon records. I still don't get why they're on secretly canadian
-duf davis is right. ani difranco does suck
-I was fairly happy with this show, even if it was a bit scattered and hectic

-ligeti nonsense vocal works never cease to entertain me
-carl stone=long sine waves. actually quite sublime

notes:
-subbing today. doing a show in the afternoon is strange.
-essential logic = lora logic from the x-ray spex. this is a totally great 2 cd comp of all her works. I love arty post-punk
-that second set started like I was in someone elses show. why do girls always call and request dull straight-forward indie rock? why can I never turn down a request from a girl?
-cromagnon into the pogues had me cracking up. something about the way that transition worked was just wonderful
-count me in on the bandwagon for the a frames. they kick ass
-it feels strange playing songs that I've heard a bunch before on the radio. neither the dalek or mr lif felt totally right
-that tim buckley track was the strangest attempt at soul/r&b I've ever heard. it was ever so slightly off, which made it great
-I could write a big long thing on the dirty reissue, but I won't. I just want them to hurry up and give the same treatment to daydream nation and sister
-that dsp was the best hiphop dis song I've heard in a while

notes:
-I'm back after 2 weeks in ohio. I had an extra hour because leif wasn't here. this show felt about 2 minutes long
-the first set was in honor of the rocket from the tombs show I saw and the one going on at maxwell's tonight
-the vocals on that talking heads track sounded remarkably like vocals from devo records. is that just the vocal style of those art-damaged punk rockers from that era?
-does anyone know if the afro-rock vol. 2 was ever released? I'd really like to hear it if it was
-lots of tumult today as tumult kicks ass
-that adult remix of erase errata is almost better than the original, which is their best song. I like it a lot
-I want the entire rhys chatham box set. it looks so amazing...
-I got a request for blackalicious about half an hour after playing blackalicious
-pell mell into 8 eyed spy was a great mix. 8 eyed spy is lydia lunch's band right after teenage jesus. good stuff
-the donner party was definitey the best request of the night. I'm a fan
-the ruins and john oswald 7"s were found while sorting through 7"s today
-I can never turn down a request for x. ever
-japanese karaoke afterlife experiment wins the award for best song title of the day
