notes:
-erasergun and silly bird records make me strangely happy
-folksmen into paolo conte was the best mix of the night, with the gamelan music into whit dickey as a close second.
-greg requested the us maple, but wanted to hear them do acdc from a 7" that I couldn't find. I was greatly disappointed, as that would have been amazing
-I really didn't like that american music club song I played. I actually had to fade it out early since I couldn't deal with it
-miles smiles=wonderful. someday I wil play all 30 minutes of go ahead john from big fun, feating the trippiest stereo effects ever.
-derek bailey doing ballads is strangely gorgeous. much better than the mark ribot from last week.
-I officially can no longer deal with ben gibbard. why is it that I always get requests for bad generic indie rock? and why do I always play them? argh.
-finds of the day: stereolab/nurse with wound, shadowy men on a shadowy planet (which wins the longest name/shortest song award), sea saw

-squincy dofo has the best back-story I've ever heard. apparently the guy discovered music while serving time for stealing a large supply of laxatives
-arbete och fritid is cool
-washing machine was my first sonic youth record. this is lee ranaldo's best spoken word piece with sy
-the more nikki sudden I hear, the more I want to hear
-the larry polansky piece is a brilliant parody of alvin lucier's I am sitting in a room.
-new ecc=wonderfully goofy
-roscoe holcomb is some great folk/bluegrass. apparently this song was on the soundtrack to zambriski point by michaelangelo antonioni (which is not a fun movie to sit through. it has no plot to speak of)
-the penderecki piece is true to its title. it sounds like thousands of people screaming in unison
-calls: 1) request for sugarcubes. 2) request for karp. 3) jon solomon calling to be let in to drop off an absurd number of arthur magazines. 4) a request for yes. 5) the next dj wanting to be let in.

notes:
-black orpheus is a wonderful brazilian movie from 1959, retelling the orpheus myth set in rio. the soundtrack is a bunch of great early bossa nova by luiz bonfa, antonio carlos jobim and joao gilberto. if you haven't seen this movie, you should. now
-betty davis is amazing, dirty, heavy funk from 1973. wow
-I'm really enjoying all the new stuff on flying bomb
-george antheil saved my show from spinning out of control. this piece is a 15 minute setting of a yeats poem by nj's addition to modernist music in the 1920s. not quite as amazing as ballet mechanique (which jannon played earlier that day), but still really great.
-yes, that is a piece by ezra pound. he actually composed a pair of really strange operas using texts from 15th century european poets. this one uses francois villon, a french poet. very odd stuff
-racebannon is my favorite record so far this year
-calls: 1. a guy who was very excited by the betty davis, wanting to know what it was. 2. the guy who requested kraftwerk yelling at me for playing the wrong track (this isn't the first time this guy has called when I haven't played the exact song that he wanted. what's his deal?) 3. jon solomon telling me about a george antheil festival in trenton a month ago. 4. jon smith making sure he had marked a track correctly.

Notes:
-snow in april just isn't right. add in my getting screwed at room draw (I didn't get the room I wanted for next year, so I'm pissed), and it's been a surreal day.
-I saw dan melchior's broke review on saturday at some bar in brooklyn with greg and courtney. they would've been better if the sound hadn't sucked and their equipment had worked right. but I enjoyed the show and would really like to see them at a better venue.
-plasic peoples of the universe is awesome. perhaps the best music to come out of czechoslovakia.
-the new racebannon is a hardcore rock opera that actually works and is insane.
-the two squirrel songs were a tribute to the squirrel who put us off the air briefly on saturday morning. squirrels should die.
-there are in fact two bands named ground zero. the first I played was something I found randomly in the stacks. the second is ottomo yoshahide's (sp?) band. the latter is far superior, but the former's not bad either.
-finds of the day: deche dans face, tim berne, junior varsity, scornflakes.

Notes:
-awesome show today. I was very happy with it and liked just about everything I played
-nino rota is better than enio morricone
-the beastie boys can almost do hardcore. almost being the operative word
-ivy green is good. it's amazing how far one chord will go
-6"s are a brilliant idea
-I actually enjoyed the billy bragg and wilco, against my better instinct. maybe it's because they weren't being serious. I can't deal with wilco when they are
-that song-poem song was the best anti-porn song I've ever heard
-chromatics sound very much like PiL
-not too impressed with the new buzzcocks. didn't mind the throwing muses, though
-alan bishop (alvarious b) is insane. though played by cerberus shoal, that song is totally sun city girls and good to boot
-song of zarathustra is some great post-hardcore screamy goodness from troubleman
-hearing norwegian wood as a ska/reggae song was a major highlight
-no interesting calls today. in fact, there were only like 2 real calls (minus a wrong number). I don't think anyone was listening
